Telluride Festival 1998

The Town of Telluride, nestled in the San Juan mountains of the southern Rockies in Colorado, comes alive during mid-June each year to the sounds of the annual Bluegrass and Country Festival. This town of just 2000 population, is swarmed by 10,000 festivarians, intent on soaking up the atmosphere and having a good time.

During the winter months, Telluride is host to skiers from around the world, and throughout the summer, a multitude of music festivals, Jazz, Folk, and Country.
Finishing touches to the stage, ready for the performers
The Bluegrass/Country festival is the biggest festival, running from Thursday to Sunday over the mid-summer weekend. During the day, many new and less known acts get their chance to perform in front of the crowd, whilst in the evening, many big names from the music world take to the stage. The 1998 festival featured dozens of performers including: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Alison Krauss, Nanci Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Catie Curtis, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Dave Grisman, Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, Big Head Todd, and John Cowan.

Crowds gather, as the concert starts......The sun starts to set, as the crowds start to groove

The main concert is from 10am to 10pm in Telluride Town Park, but throughout the four days, there are many side shows taking place throughout the town. Elks Park, the town square in front of the courthouse is one popular venue for inpromptu jams, and star performances in front of a very intimate audience, whilst the victorian Sheridan Opera House, with seating for just a couple of hundred, provides a superb venue.

To photograph the whole event would be a mammoth task, but I was lucky enough to be able to capture some of my favourite artists on film, to share with everyone else. Please take time to check out:-

Mary-Chapin Carpenter
Alison Krauss
Nanci Griffith
Emmylou Harris

During the four days, the town throbs to the beat and hustle, but taking just a few minutes walk, you can find some peace and tranquility, away from the crowds, and enjoy some of Tellurides beautiful sceneary and fresh air.
